Responses in the atmospheric general circulation to the global warming are studied with the Center for Climate System Research (CCSR) / National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (CGCM). Atmospheric concentration of the carbon dioxide is gradually increased by 1% per year for 150 years. The Hadley cells in the low latitudes are expanded into up-and pole-ward, and their intensity is increased in the northern winter while it is decreased in the northern summer. The Ferrell cells in the middle latitudes shift into the poleward. The westerly jet in the middle latitudes also shifts into up- and pole-ward because the barotropic zone gets narrow due to the expansion of the Hadley cell. In the northern winter, the westerly jet gets strong in the northern part of the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean suggesting that the extratropical cyclones are intensified.
