Abstract

Boiling occurred in an excavated soil within double sheet pile walls. A case history and countermeasures are given, causes of seepage failure are discussed, and the following results are then obtained: (1) There is consisted of layered soils. Permeable sand is overlaid by impermeable silty sand, in which a large head loss took place and boiling occurred. (2) The berm put aside at the longitudinal ends within double sheet pile walls plays a role of a loaded filter, so the seepage failure caused by the three-dimensional concentration of seepage flow is prevented. (3) The stability against seepage failure of soil within double sheet pile walls decreases due to the concentration of seepage flow in two dimensions from both outsides.
