本研究では,平仮名一文字抹消検査を5才から15才までの被験者に行い,文字認知の発達を検討する。具体的な目的は,(1)文字認知の発達過程,(2)男女差,(3)文字系列の横組と縦組の比較,(4)誤り分析による鏡映文字の誤りの検討を,発達的に吟味することにある。実験材料・てすと1-り文字抹消,てすと2-も文字抹消,てすと3-す文字抹消,てすと4-ち文字抹消で,これらは横組に文字を配列し,てすと5から8まではこれらを縦組に文字を配列してある。被験者・5才から15才まで,各年令60名(男子30名・女子30名)結果は次のようである。(1)発達過程・認知得点では,5才から15才にかけて進歩が認められるが,特に7才での進歩が著しい。誤謬率では,5才から7才にかけて著しい減少が認められる。(2)男女差・認知得点,誤謬率とも,男子より女子の方が優れている。(3)横組と縦組・認知得点,誤謬率ともに,年令が高くなるにつれ横組の方が縦組よりも優れている。(4)鏡映関係への誤りは5才児に多く,7才まで急激に減少する。

Using a cancelling test of Hiragana letters, the present study aims at (1) identifying the developmental process of letter recognition in children from 5 to 15-years in age, (2) identifying sex-differences in letter recognition, (3) examining which arrangement (horizontal or vertical) of letters is easier for childen to recognize, and (4) developmentally examining errors in cancelling with mirror-drawing letters. Experimental materials: Test 1-"り" letter cancelling, Test 2-"も" letter cancelling, Test 3-"す" letter cancelling and Test 4-"ち" letter cancelling. All of these tests consist of the horizontal arrangement of letters, and vertical arrangement is adopted from Test 5 to Test 8. Subjects: Sixty children (30 males and 30 females) from 5- to 15-years in age are distributed to each age group. Main results are as follows: (1) Developmental process: In recognition scores, progress is observed according to the age of the subjects ranging from the 5- to 15-year old, especially those at the age of 7-years. Error rate decreases in accordance with the age from 5- to 7-years. (2) Sex difference: Female subjects are superior to male subjects both in recognition scores and in error rate. (3) Vertical and horizontal arrangements: The horizontal arrangement produces higher recognition scores and lower error rate according to the age of subjects. (4) Errors with mirror-drawing letters are most outstanding at the age of 5-years, decreasing rapidly up to the age of 7-years.
