Abstract

This paper reports characteristics of the water driven spindle that has been designed for ultra-precision machine tools in our study. First, stiffness of water hydrostatic journal bearing of the spindle with various conditions was measured. The result shows the stiffness is much smaller than the required stiffness at the design stage. In addition, experimental results show that the spindle rotational speed reaches to the rated rotational speed with fewer flow rate than the design result. Experimental and theoretical considerations show that these differences between theoretical and experimental results are the primarily due to both influence of the backpressure and the modeling error of the pressure-flow characteristics of parts in spindle, especially hydrostatic bearings. Result of machining tests using the spindle is also presented.
