Abstract

This paper deals with the active control of response of structures such as buildings and towers using a tuned mass damper with pendulum and lever mechanism(LP-TMD). During a strong earthquake, a structure shows the nonlinear response due to hysteretic restoring force and the the changes in stiffness and damping occur. Therefore, the control system should have the robustness. In this paper, a sliding mode control method with strong robustness is introduced to control the response of nonlinear structure. The active control system of TMD with pendulum and lever based on the sliding mode control method is applied to the four-degree-of-freedom system. It is shown that this system can be effective for the reducing the strong response of multi-degree of freemdom strucuture compared with conventional LQ-control.
