Re-evaluation of near-field ground motion on the past disastrous in-land shallow earthquakes is one of the most important issues in earthquake engineering. In this study, the characteristics of the strong motion during the 1948 Fukui earthquake are investigated using the strong motion simulation technique. The hybrid simulation technique, which combines a 3D finite difference method and a stochastic Green function synthesis method, is performed for the Fukui earthquake, referring to the re-estimated ground motion intensity from the damage data. The source parameters of the Fukui earthquake proposed by Irikura and Kamae(1999) are modified in order for better fitting of the simulation results with the re-estimated ground motion intensity distribution. The results show that simulated near-field ground motions have large amplitude with period of 1 to 2 seconds due to the combination of the effects of the source and the soil amplification.
