Abstract

The clouded salamander, Hynobius neblosus is widely distributed around west Japan, but it is endangered to extinction in Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures. We evaluated environment on habitat of this salamander in Osaka and Shiga Prefectures, because H. neblosus is endangered to extinction in Osaka Prefecture but more abundant in Shiga Prefecture than Osaka. Using field census data and Geographic Information Systems, we estimated habitat suitability and made maps of the potential habitat of H. neblosus of 250 m grid by using dataset of average elevation, average slope, percentage of land use and valley (presence or not). We found that incidence of spawn in local habitat is lower in smaller habitats than larger ones, and average habitat area is smaller in Osaka than Shiga. So that we think this is one of reasons why density of H. nebulosus is lower in Osaka Prefecture.
