Abstract

In 1995 at the earthquake in Kobe and Awaji, we heard that the seaborne traffic by any kinds of ships played a big role instead of the paralyzed land traffics. This is very significant to use transportation with human resources and ships, which are used as accommodation and supplied the goods at the quay. We sent the questionnaire about activity of support to the mariners and the local fishermen's unions and investigated what supporting activities they performed after the earthquake. And also we surveyed how much ships registered near to Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo can access to disaster area with supply items such as medical helps, foods, fuel, commodities etc. From the above investigation, we propose the utility of training ships belong to maritime and fishery education and training institutions in Japan at the big scale disaster.
