The aim of this article is to review the prevalence of bulimia nervosa in females and to reveal problems in conducting epidemiological studies of this disease. More than 30 reports in the international literature concerning bulimia prevalence rates were found using the database‘Medline’. Point prevalence rates of bulimia nervosa, based on DSM-III-R, ranged from 1.6~3.0% by questionnaire and 0~3.4% by interview. Those referring to reports based on registered data from clinics or health care services accounted for 0.02~0.089%, rates much lower than those of the above nonclinical population-based studies. However, comparison among these studies was difficult due to lack of uniformity in diagnostic criteria, measuring materials, and study populations. Further well-designed epidemiological studies should be conducted;careful consideration should be given to standardization of the methodology used to study this issue.
