Abstract

A Japanese version of the CUCEI (the College and University Classroom Environment Inventory) which is a measurement instrument for university classroom environments was devised and applied to students in lecture-type university classes. In the present study, we examined the reliability and validity of the shortened CUCEI scales, "involvement", "Satisfaction", "Task Orientation", and "innovation", using the 2000 and 2003 year data. The surveys were done to lecture-type classes of our School. Reliability coefficients were calculated on both individual and classroom levels. Every scale showed high reliability at the classroom level. The items of CUCEI were factor-analyzed, using the individual and the classroom mean data. In both cases, though "Satisfaction" and "Task Orientation" were not separated, the items of "Involvement" and "Innovation" appeared as independent factors on each scale. This item analysis approved a factorial validity. A multi-regression analysis showed a significant relation among "Need for Achievement" as the dependent variable and the scales of classroom environment as independent variables. Some aspects on applying the CUCEI to lecture-type university classes were discussed. (Waseda Journal of Human Sciences, 18 (1) : 19-29, 2005)
