With an increase of the aged population their precise data of passive range of motion (ROM) is required to make a plan of effective rehabilitation program. With a goniometer we measured the passive ROM of the joints of upper extremities and lower extremities in 27 aged male and 19 aged female. Their mean age was 74.6±6.3 years old. The data of ROM of the studied joints were compared with normal values as shown previously by the Japanese Physical Therapy Association as the standard reference. The results showed decreases in ranges of most motions of the male and significant differences were also found between male and female in shoulder flexion, extension, external rotation, elbow flexion, extension, hip flexion, internal rotation, knee flexion, ankle plantar flexion. It was also revealed that the values of many motion of the joints differed from those of the standard reference. These results indicate that connective tissues, particularly joint capsuler and paraarticular muscles and tendons more rigid with increasing age. In addition, it was revealed that the fluctuation in the range of joint was affected not only by aging and sex but also by life style and daily activities of the individuals.
