本研究の主たる目的は次の2点である。第一に, 遺伝に対して大学生がどのような問いを持つかを明らかにすること, 第二に, 遺伝の知識量によって, 問いの類型に違いが生じるという仮説を検証することである。まず, T大学の学生54名(男29名, 女25名)に, 遺伝について疑問に思うことや不思議に思うことをできるだけたくさん記述するように求めた。大学生が記述した問いを内容に基づいて分類したところ, 「遺伝(heredity)」と「遺伝子技術」に関する問いが多かった。ヒトの遺伝や遺伝子技術に対する興味・関心は高いことが知られており, 大学生においても興味や関心の高いものについて問う傾向があることが示された。次に, 大学生177名(男87名, 女90名)を対象として, 10問からなる遺伝に関する知識テストを実施し, その後クローンに関する新聞記事を読んでもらい, その記事に関する問いを記述するよう求めた。その結果, 遺伝に関する知識が多いほどクローンについて多くの問いを記述することや問いに用いる疑問詞が異なることが明らかにされた。これらの知見から, 遺伝の知識量の違いが何をどのように問うかに影響を及ぼしていることが示唆された。

The principal aim of the present study is elucidate the kind of questions about genetics, which asked by undergraduate students, and to analyze the quality of questions, which should vary depending upon the quantity of knowledge of genetics. In the first investigation, 54 students (29 men, 25 women) of T University were asked to describe the questions about genetics in large numbers as much as possible. The questions described by them were classified based on the contents. As a result, it was shown clearly that there were more questions about heredity and generelated technology than other contents. It was suggested that people tend to ask a question about an interested matter. In the second investigation, 177 undergraduate students (87 men, 90 women) were firstly required to solve the genetics test which consists of 10 questions. Then, they were asked to read the newspaper article about a clone, and to describe the questions about it. As a result, those students whose results of the test were good described many questions about a clone article rather than those whose results were bad. The interrogative used for describing a question also depended on the results of a heredity test. From these findings, it was suggested that the quantity of knowledge on genetics influenced the quality of question about this fields.
