The purpose of present study was to investigate the relationship between the personal trait anxiety and the form of personal space. Subjects were 240 (male 120, female 120) undergraduate students. Anxiety level of them were measured by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI: Spielberger, C.D., 1970). Each of male and female subjects groups were classified into three sub groups (high anxiety group, middle anxiety group, low anxiety group) based on their scores of STAI. Then Subjects were given eight direction scale and required to put personal spaces against "a close same sex", "a close other sex", "an unknown same sex", and "an unkown other sex". The analysis (t-test) revealed that high anxiety group showed more large personal space in the all patterns, and in the almost all conditions, the longer distance was set in the one' s back direction. It was suggested that trait anxiety effects to determine one's personal space regardless the difference of the object.
