Abstract

The present paper reports on a state of the art of the assessment methods that are employed in schools for children with disabilities in Akita Prefecture. The findings of the study are summarized as follows. First, the most widely used assessment method was of a self-report type, such as a Landolt ring task, while the least widely used method was an objective assessment method, such as the Teller Acuity Cards. Second, the number of students whose eyesight teachers felt it extremely difficult to assess included 58% to 67% of grades 1 to 3 of primary school pupils, 32% to 44% of grades 4 to 6 of primary school pupils, 25% of lower secondary students, and 15% of upper secondary students. Third, teachers evaluated 70% of these groups of students to be free from problems with eyesight. Fourth, those students whose eyesight was not assessed included those who were infirm or invalid (92.8%), physically handicapped (57.2%), or intellectually handicapped (22.7%). Fifth, the Teller Acuity Test (TAT) that the present author administered to the students successfully measured 23 out of 25 students whose eyesight had previously not been assessed. The paper concludes with several suggestions for the method of assessing the eyesight of children with disabilities.
