As the result of our complete research on the inner sanctuaries of shrine in the west area of Hiroshima prefecture, where they were the most prosperous in the Middle Ages, we have found three new types of kokera-buki (Split wooden board roof). Specially long split board was used to make the new types of the roof. The new types are segmental kokera-buki, straight kokera-buki and straight temporary kokera-buki. Normal kokera-buki was used from early 14th century till the end of 16th century. Segmental and straight kokera-buki were used from the middle of 15th century, and straight temporary kokera-buki was used from the end of 15th century. Normal kokera-buki was the most formal. Segmental kokera-buki was a little casual, straight kokera-buki was more casual and straight temporary kokera-buki was the most casual in those days. Normal kokera-buki was used to make inner sanctuaries of early days, because they were faithful miniatures of main shrine buildings. In the course of time inner sanctuaries became to be mere vessels and their roofs became to be casual and false ones.
