従来, 潜函病を中心に行われてきた高気圧酸素(Hyperbaric oxygen, HBO)療法は最近, 適応疾患を広めつつある。因みに放射線被爆により生じる放射線膀胱炎, 放射線腸炎, 放射線骨髄炎に対し有効である。HBOには副腎皮質機能亢進作用があり, ステロイド投与が長期に及んだ患者のステロイド離脱にも応用できる。HBOと放射線療法あるいはHBOと癌化学療法の併用が, 一部の悪性腫瘍にも効を奏すことがわかっている。脊髄損傷に対するHBOの治療成績の解釈は複雑で, その有効性は急性期に限られている。HBO療法は癒着あるいは麻痺性のイレウスに対し高い有効率を示し, その分, 手術件数は減少している。突発性難聴はHBO療法のよい適応であり, 現在, この疾患が治療患者で最も多い。その他, 虚血性病変の一部に試みられている。この治療の最大の欠点は治療装置の設立に高額な費用を要することである。

Excessive irradiation to the pelvic cavity occasionally induces severe tissue hemorrhage, irritability, although favorable therapeutic outcome for pelvic malignant tumors can be gained. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has been frequently effective in such patients with radiation cystitis, radiation colitis and radiation osteomyelitis. HBO therapy consists of oxygen inhalation at 2 absolute atmospheric pressures 90 minutes daily for several weeks improves adrenocortical function in patients with adrenocortical insufficiency. Thus, HBO therapy can be available for releasing steroid dependency in patients received long term steroid treatment. HBO treatment demonstrates favorable effects in patients with ischemic disease, ileus, osteomyelitis, some malignant tumors with radiation or antineoplastic agents. Each HBO therapy has been performed in different pressures environment without control study, which makes precise comparisons difficult. However, fundamentally HBO appears to show a beneficial effect on vascular comprised organs by increasing the oxygen tension in the tissue.
