From the evidence of an inscription (imperfect because of a fire in 1731) on the last page of London, British Library, MS. Cotton Vitellius F vii, Emily Hope Alien concluded that the Vitellius manuscript must have been given by Joan Holand to Eleanor Cobham, the second wife of Humphrey Duke of Gloucester. In this paper I have re-examined the evidence. I propose that the French text of Ancrene Wisse in the Vitellius manuscript might have been written sometime while Joan Holand's great grandmother, Joan de Geneville (1285-1356), was young, in or around Wigmore or Ludlow. Both places have a strong connection with one of the earliest copies of Ancrene Wisse in English.
