The Ixil inhabit the northern part of the department of ElQuiche, Guatemala. The geographical environment of this zoneisolates them from western culture, and they are conservative intheir retention of indigenous life-ways. Chajul, one of the threemunicipios of the Ixil people, is located on the eastern slopes of theCuchumatanes. This article describes some Ixilic songs of the Chajul. AlthoughIxilic songs sound indigenous, and the style in which theyare performed is clearly indigenous in rhythmic as well as vocalterms, the notated melodies seem to be European. Musical analysisof the songs revealed that : i) the melody type or frame shown by thenote example G is found in many songs, ii) this melody type or itsprototype(s) could have existed in Pre-Columbian times, and iii)the melodies transcribed in this article probably resulted from theintroduction of the European ones among the Chajul, who shouldhave had already such melody types as the example G of p. 167.
