The need for bacteriologic examinations in the diagnosis and monitoring of periodontal diseases has increased in recent years. Various laboratory techniques have been applied to the microbiological diagnosis of periodontal disease, however, these techniques still have some desadvantages. Recent investigations have introduced a newly developed simple and practical method using DNA or enzyme probes. We have reported the clinical usefulness of Periocheck®as a diagnostic system for detecting the enzyme activity derived from periodontopathic bacteria such as Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Bacteroides forsythus.<BR>The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the Periocheck®test and clinical changes after periodontal curettage. Fifty-seven sites from 31 subjects with adult periodontitis were monitored after treatment. Clinical examinations and the Periocheck®test were performed for up to 18 weeks.<BR>The results revealed that Periocheck®-positive sites 2 weeks after periodontal curettage were found mostly at sites with deeper periodontal pockets, in molars, and with furcation involvement. Clinical improvement was significantly found at Periocheck®-negative sites 2 weeks after the (Rtre) atment comparing with positive site.<BR>These results suggest that the Periocheck®test should be capable of predicting periodontal conditions after treatment.
