Abstract

It is 10 years since the records continuum which is a new theoretical framework for records management and archives administration was comprehensively advocated by Frank Upward and Sue McKemmish. However, it has not yet become a new paradigm which is fully endorsed by the community of records managers and archivists, especially that in Japan. This article first presents the essence of the records continuum as concisely as possible and translates the words "record," "archive" and "archives" into Japanese in the context of the continuum. It then introduces the DIRKS, a practical methodology for good recordkeeping into which the records continuum was evolved in Australia. It also gives you an overview of the records disposal authorities which are developed and issued using the DIRKS. Furthermore, it considers how the framework has made an impact on practices of records management and archives administration.
