Ceiling fans can be used not only to make a breeze for the occupants but also to control the airflow pattern in a room. When horizontal supply openings are used to cool the room in summer, the cold air drops down to the occupied zone directly. Therefore ceiling fans can be used as complementary devices for air-distribution to prevent the horizontal jets from falling and make air circulation in the room. In this way, ceiling fans can improve thermal comfort in the occupied zone. In this study, the velocity and temperature distributions in a large room of an existing building were measured. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was also conducted to understand the details of the airflow patterns and the temperature distributions. Results of the measurement and CFD analysis were compared. In addition, the velocity, temperature distributions, and Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) was calculated and confirmed effects of a ceiling fan in changing it's location.
