This paper analyzes the effects of the youth cohort size and higher education on youth wages during the period from 1973 to 1996. We consider it very important to analyze this problem because the population is aging very rapidly and the proportion of the labor force undertaking higher education has recently been increasing more and more in Japan. We first examine descriptively what the data show us about this problem, and then attempt some regression analyses. By these regression analyses, we obtain the following results: that the change in the youth cohort size has a positive effect on youth wages; that higher education is considered to be the opportunity cost of schooling; and that the job vacancy rate relates positively with youth wages so that they are procyclical to the business cycle.
