The quality of raw silk is highly dependent on the physiological characteristics of silkworms, which previously were used to be subject to natural as well as climatic conditions of the region where the product was manufactured. The author traces the historical origin of raw silk production from its origin in China (before the third century) to its gradual spread to the European continent following the twelfth century, and its homecoming in the mid nineteenth century to Asia, which henceforth reappeared as a center of its production.
