type:Article

The purpose of this article is to scrutinize the entrepreneurial activities of a cotton cloth weaver, Yoemon Sasaki Shoten, in the Bingo region of Hiroshima Prefecture (an eastern part of the prefecture) during and after the First World War, and to analyze the behavior of its workers. Sasaki Shoten, which was not only a manufacturer but also a merchant, procured much of its cotton yarn from quite a few merchants at the local area and in the city of Osaka. A part of the yarn thus acquired was sent to two weaving sheds of its own, while the rest was sold to small weavers in its neighborhood. Around the depression of 1920, some local merchants in the region, including Sasaki Shoten, speculatively engaged in the future trading of cotton yarn. The workers of the Sasaki Weaving Factory were mainly female, most of whom had grown up near the shed and completed primary education at best. In the agricultural society, where opportunities for employment in modern business enterprises were scarce, the Sasaki Weaving Factory was an important working place for the local people. There was relatively high worker mobility between Sasaki's two weaving sheds.
