Abstract
The "Jiga Shakuso-zu" (Kansai University Library Collection), compiled by OGUCHI Kinkoku and published in 1842, contains prefaces by Kinkoku OGUCHI himself and His student Teccho, as well as an epigraph by NUKINA Kaioku. In the album, one finds a total of 124 illustrations of flowering plants and trees by late Edo period artists. The majority of these are painters belonging to the Maruyama, Shijo, and Kishi schools, but the Kano, Tosa, literati, and other schools are also represented. The collection of illustrations is related to the Shicao (smaller plants) volume of the Chinese encyclopedic dictionary, Erya. This work should be considered a valuable resource for medicinal herbs and natural history studies in East Asia.
