Abstract

This study investigates J. C. Hepburn's manuscript for Waei-gorin-shusei. The manuscript contains 499 pages and approximately 7,000 headwords, three quarters of which appear in the first edition (Hepburn, 1867). Errors in writing, headwords and their descriptions, and orthographies of Chinese characters in the manuscript are compared with those in other dictionaries (Setsuyoshu) that were published from the Muromachi to the Edo periods. Results indicate that several aspects of the errors in writing are identical to the patterns of miscopies due to the usage of Gazoku-yogaku-shinsho (Mori, 1855). In addition, several headwords, their descriptions, and the orthography of Chinese characters in the manuscript are similar to those of Gazoku-yogaku-shinsho. This suggests that Hepburn may have referred to Gazoku-yogaku-shinsho while writing the manuscript. Differences in the headwords and the orthographies of Chinese characters between the manuscript and the first edition are also discussed.
