Abstract

Modern psychical research, i.e. scientists' research on psychical phenomena, started with audible rapping noise incidents that occurred in the United States in 1848. After that, scientists and others, mainly in Western countries, investigated psychical phenomena and existence of the spirit after death by experimental methods. The Society for Psychical Research was established in England. Spiritualism, a new life guiding principle came into existence and Spiritualists, who believe in continued existence after-death and the possibility of communicating with the spirit, came into being. Psychical research of the West was introduced to Japan by Wasaburou Asano. He established the Society for Spiritual Science Research in Japan and created Japanese Spiritualism. His successor, Takeo Waki further developed the movement and Hiroyoshi Kuwahara created Neo Spiritualism which combined Japanese Spiritualism with the content of British spirit messages.
