Abstract

This study examined the effect of patients death on the nurses in the palliative care units from the viewpoint of grief and coping. The author made the scale on grief and coping behaviors from the data of 197 nurses who work in palliative care units. In the grief scale, three factors were extracted: depression, a sense of self-condemnation, and feelings of capture and lassitude. In the coping behavior scale, three factors were also extracted: positive-emotion-focused coping, negative-emotion-focused coping, problem-fucused coping. The results showed that age and working years were related to a sense of the self-condemnation. It was also indicated that supporting nurses also who are young and less experienced is especially important. In relation with coping, there was one particular group of nurses in which the grief score was extremely low. Regarding this point, further research from the viewpoint of burnout will be necessary.
