Abstract

Although a considerable amount of research has been done on the use of self-management skills by children with developmental disabilities, there is little agreement as to the concept or method of self-management. The purpose of the present paper is to analyze self-management skills and advance a new framework, called "a support system of self-management", for planning, implementing, evaluating, and analyzing self-management. This system is comprised of 3 steps. The first step includes defining the target behavior, deciding on a discriminative stimulus, and self-recording ; the second step includes establishment of goals and rules, and self-evaluation ; and the third step includes choice of reinforcers (or punishers), self-establishing operations, and self-reinforcement (or self-punishment). In addition to the 3 steps, the system focuses on competitive behavior. The usefulness of this support system for self-management skills is discussed in terms of self-management with support.
