Abstract

Since molecular phylogenetic analyses are undoubtedly important in studies of plant taxonomy, if separate DNA collections are made they can be quite useful and informative. However, many plant species have not yet been subjected to molecular phylogenic analysis, since, at least in part, they grow in remote areas that are difficult to access, such as the alpine region of the Himalayas. The most common way to collect DNA samples of plants during a botanical expedition to such areas is to dry fresh samples using silica gel. This method is simple and easy, and has been used for many researchers. However, adopting this method, we should carry vast amount of silica gel for unexpected amount of plants to be collected. Recently, we adopted FTA[○!R] Cards (Whatman Inc.) for collecting DNA in the field for subsequent PCR analysis, due to its easiness and compactness of the materials required for collection of DNA. The Society of Himalayan Botany, Tokyo has formerly adopted this system for general collection of plant DNA in the botanical expeditions from 2003, aiming of a goal to supply DNA resources of Himalayan plants to the world researchers. Usage of this system in the field of Russia in 2004 is introduced as an example.
