Abstract

The hydraulic properties of unsaturated soil affect not only seepage but also strength and deformation characteristics. This report explains two examples and summarizes an engineering technique of evaluating the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils. In the first example of the infiltration test, it explains that a simple experimental boundary condition is necessary when inverse parameter estimation of soil hydraulic functions is employed to predict the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soil. Next, the estimation method of evaluating soil moisture profiles using surface ground-penetrating radar is shown to be useful as a non-destructive investigation and evaluation of space distribution of soil moisture.
