In line with Yokoyama (2005), the goal of this paper is to identify concepts of welfare in terms of an Oriental thought which has been unexplored in contemporary social welfare studies. More specifically, I will deal with "Meng zi" and make an attempt to uncover the social welfare properties in the political philosophy, which are three-fold : (1) "Wang Dao, " which has been recognized as Mencius own unique political idea, was quite considerate of the aged, (2) the actions taken to assist the poor was a safety net to assure the people in its day, and (3) special attention to the aged was a top-priority issue for those striving to get into power.
