The intercalation of cobalt ions (Co(II)) into the interlayer space of a layered silicate, magadiite, was conducted by ion exchange reactions between magadiite and aqueous solution of cobalt(II) chloride. Thermal treatment of the Co(II)-mgadiites in air at 1000℃ resulted in the transformation to cristobalite with retaining the platy particle morphology of the original magadiite.
