Abstract

This paper attempts to find the effective factors at the word formation level on the choice of "provisional compound word formations" which can alternate with corresponding "word group formations". Focusing on "word groups" of the form "A-teki na B" and "provisional compound words" of the form "A-teki B" in newspaper editorials, this paper performs quantitative analyses to determine whether the higher frequency of usage of the latter type correlates with factors such as "origin type" (native Japanese word, Sino-Japanese word, etc.) and "part of speech" of the two elements A and B. Certain strong trends were found as follow. We found that "A-teki B" formations occur most when both A and B are 2 character Sino-Japanese nouns. Interestingly, these factors coincide with those commonly observed in the formation of 4 character Sino-Japanese compound words and native Japanese compound words. Thus, the choice of formations of the "A-teki B" type over comparable "A-teki na B" expressions is affected by the word formation model seen in existing compound words.
