当論文は、フィリピンにおける宗教の公共性に関するひとつの試論として、その多数派宗教といわれるカトリック教会が、「他者」をどう規定し、どのようなかかわりを構築しようとしているかを、司教の全国レベルの協議会(フィリピン・カトリック司教協議会CBCP)の組織構造と活動の枠組、及びCBCPの公文書類における取り扱いを分析することで探ろうとしている。そこから浮かび上がるのは、教会内外の人々を「善意の」人々として教会のリーダーシップの下に取り込もうとする傾向、キリスト教諸派との選択的な連携、非キリスト教諸宗教に対する単純化された理解、一部の現場における関心や取り組みの高さに相反してCBCPレベルでの関心の低さなどである。こうしたことの背景にカトリック教会の過去の遺産としての社会的地位への安住傾向が挙げられ、これに対して、既に積み重ねのある庶民レベルで生じている問題との真摯な取り組みに指導者レベルが積極的に呼応できるかどうかが、カトリック教会の今後の他者理解のあり方を決めるのではないか、とする。

This article is a preliminary analysis on the public nature of religion in the Philippines, and it deals with the Catholic Church's definition of "others" and their endeavor for promoting relationship with them. What are analyzed here are organizations inside the Catholic Hierarchy, especially Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines as well as the framework of their activities, and public documents published by CBCP. The main findings are: CBCP's inclination to draw broader audience who are regarded as the people of "goodwill" under their very leadership, selective cooperation with other Christian denominations, simplified categorization and understanding of non-Christian religions, and their low interest in these issues despite serious engagement found in the mission fields. The author points bishops' tendency to be satisfied with the status quo of their privileged social status, and predicts that if they are to understand others deeper, they may first have to respond much more seriously such experiences at the field level.
