To investigate how domestic science should incorporate the viewpoint of sustainable lifestyle, elementary school lessons in the nutritional field were developed and studied from four viewpoints. After seven classes of teaching practice ("some ideas for washing-up," "water channel in the school zone - past and present," "observation of water channel and horseweed picking," "making steamed bread containing horseweed" and "summary") involving 90 fifth-graders in Kumamoto City Elementary School A, their impressions of the lessons and descriptions of the assignment on washing-up were analyzed to determine the lesson outcome. For comparison, the same assignment on washing-up was given to pupils of School B, which was matched with School A by regional environment and school scale, to analyze the descriptions. Findings were as follows : 1. Regarding viewpoint 1, "to gain an understanding of today's sustainable living challenges" and viewpoint 2, "to learn how to overcome challenges to sustainable living on an individual level," almost ail pupils achieved the goal. 2. Regarding viewpoint 3, "to learn how to overcome challenges to sustainable living on a social level," their level of achievement was low. 3. Regarding viewpoint 4, "to be proactively engaged in social efforts to overcome challenges to sustainable living," 20% of the pupils achieved the goal. This level of achievement, however, is considered to be worth a certain extent of appreciation, given that no pupils at School B achieved this goal.
