Abstract

Embedment effects of a footing on shear force at pile heads were investigated based on dynamic centrifuge tests on a superstructure-footing model that is supported by 2x2 piles in either a thick liquefiable layer or a thin liquefiable layer cases. The following conclusions were reached: (1) the shear force increases due to the embedment effects consisting of total earth thrust and sidewall friction in the thick liquefiable layer case. In contrast, the shear force decreases due to the embedment effects in the thin liquefiable layer case; (2) the above difference in the embedment effects depend on the amplitudes of the soil and footing displacement.
