Polyethylene film has been irradiated with ion beams, and the adsorbents are produced by means of graft polymerization. The adsorbents can collect either valuable or pollutant elements dissolving in water environments. Depth distribution of the density of ion-beam-induced radical and the degree of grafting has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) method and gravimetric method. HDPE sample piling up six sheets whose thickness is 50 μm were irradiated with 3.4 MeV proton beam. Ion-beam-induced radical density was increase with the energy deposition increase. On the other hand, degree of grafting had the maximum at an energy deposition of about 950keV and had a threshold that causes a decrease of degree of grafting in the energy range from 1000 to 1250 keV. Moreover, ion-beam-induced radical species were identified with the simulation fitting method. In case of 3.4 MeV irradiation polyenyl radical was the main component, and alkyl radical and allyl radical existed slightly. However, in case of 2.05 MeV irradiation alkyl radical occupied more than the half of the component, and polyenyl radical and allyl radical occupied remainder.
