Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to verify the concept of "arithmetic disabilities" on the basis of a review from various perspectives, such as the legal status of learning disabilities in the United States, practical educational approaches for students with arithmetic disabilities, arithmetic disabilities within the framework of research on learning disabilities in Japan and other countries, and the international medical diagnostic standards for arithmetic disabilities, which should be important for the actual diagnosis on learning disabilities in Japan. The results of the investigation showed that there was a wide variety in both content and range in the use of the term. Thus, it is necessary to define the term "arithmetic disabilities" clearly, as the legal status of learning disabilities is currently being examined in Japan. As the term was defined, 3 important matters were considered: (1) bringing in a developmental perspective; (2) the need of conceptualize the definition of arithmetic disabilities more widely, rather than focusing only on difficulties in computation; and (3) including the viewpoint of information processing, in order to teach in a way that copes with the characteristic cognitive disorder as a sub-category.
