Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the conditions under which people with developmental disabilities could search for information using a computer. Participants in the study were adults, 14 men and 6 women, with developmental disabilities (average age 23, range 17-32; average IQ 51, range 38-81). In Study 1, the authors examined whether the participants could learn to use a mouse. In Study 2, the authors evaluated the participants' computer searches, and analyzed their error patterns. In Study 3, the authors used a free-choice procedure to examine whether the participants preferred searching for and finding information using a computer or using a book. All participants acquired the skill of using a mouse. In Study 2, half of the participants were able to use a computer to search for information. In the free-choice condition in Study 3, participants showed a statistically significant preference for the computer. The results are discussed in terms of the accessibility of information and the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities in the present information-oriented society.
