This study defined and arranged 2047 data records of Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patients according to the disease pattern coding system of traditional Chinese medicine (i.e., B-code). Hierarchical cluster analysis is then used to cluster the commonly occurring disease patterns of SLE by B-code. Based on analysis of the results, we believe that hierarchical cluster analysis is more suited for clinical use by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physicians. The results of the hierarchical cluster analysis can be used to derive principles for recognizing disease patterns. These principles can create a TCM system that can help TCM physicians provide more accurate diagnosis and more effective treatment.
