Congenital defects mean the morphological and functional anomalies present at birth induced by genetic or environmental factors, and they are deviated very much from the normal conditions. The causes of most congenital anomalies are unknown but they are thought to be produced by the interaction of the genes with environmental factors. We think that maternal nutritional status as an environmental factor plays an important role in maintaining the normal embryonic growth and development. However, the requirement for micronutrients and their balance in embryos during pregnancy remains unknown. The special edition, "Vitamins/Minerals and Reproduction", introduced the relationship between micronutrients including vitamin A, biotin, folic acid and vitamin B_<12>, zinc and minerals and embryotoxicity. We hope that this information is of use in distinguishing the cause and mechanism of congenital defects as well as in the prevention of many kinds of defects in the future.
