Abstract

We tested the validity of a screening questionnaire for use with five-year-old children. The questionnaire was developed for early detection of developmental disorders (Dairoku et al., 2006). There were 23 items for homeroom teachers nd 17 items for parents. 648 kindergarten children in Tsukuba City were surveyed with these two questionnaires. From observing these children and interviewing their teachers in nursery school, 87 of the children were found or suspected to have developmental or child care problems. The discrimination power of each item of these questionnaires was tested by comparing the answers about children with and without these problems. Eventually, 2 items for teachers and 1 item for parents were deleted. Both questionnaires showed sufficiently high reliability and validity. Since questionnaire items were subject to various interpretations, some interpretations of each item were listed as subitems. It thus became clear that kindergarten teachers must be enlightened in this regard. Moreover, since different situations can lead to different interpretations of a given item, it is necessary to specify the situation in which the behavior was observed, and to assess specific nursing programs or the goals of the kindergarten.
