Abstract
Spontaneous mutants representing novel phenotypes were found in selfed progeny of ‘Akage’. An indeterminate mutant, ectopic palea dwarf (epd), decreasing hull size (dhs), degraded auricle and semi-dwarf (das) and chlorina-Akage (chl-Akage) were characterized as recessive mutants. epd showed a severe phenotype under winter conditions for the proliferation of spikelets, although under summer conditions, it showed a slightly reduced first internode, high sterility, multiple ectopic palea-like structures inside spikelets, and double lemmas. The candidate locus was localized near the OsMADS6 locus on chromosome 2 and large deletion was found inside the gene. dhs showed decreased hull toward the edge of each rachis. In the winter season, the phenotype recovered as normal ‘Akage’. Semi-dwarf das showed 67% reduced plant height. As auricles of the mutants degraded, leaf blades became erect. A chlorophyll mutant and severe dwarf such as d1 mutant were also detected. The mutability of ‘Akage’ would be useful to generate novel mutants by self-crossing.<br>
