Abstract

It is essential to locate the center of resistance so that efficient tooth movement could be achieved through the minimum course. Determination of the center of resistance of groups of teeth in addition to individual teeth is necessary for understanding the mechanics of tooth movement as they relate to clinical orthodontics. The objective of the present study was to determine and compare the 3-dimensional locations of the center of resistance of two groups of teeth, specifically four and six mandibular anterior teeth, by means of an experimental mechanics method using Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI). The center of resistance of the four mandibular anterior teeth was located between the mandibular central incisors of frontal view, 6mm posterior to the labial surface of the root of the central incisor of lateral view, and at a distance of half the root length of the central incisor of vertical direction. The center of resistance of the six anterior teeth differed from that of the four anterior teeth by a distance of 2mm in the labio-lingual direction, indicating nearly identical locations for both groups of teeth. These findings about the center of resistance indicate that it might be possible to move the entire mandibular anterior tooth region more efficiently.
