抄録

In Japan, it has been widely critisized that pupils have been usually educated without character formations. Indeed ,Japanese education has been excellent on pupils' high performances in 3R's. But, they don't have respect for others ,moral codes ,attitudes for social problems, etc. The reasons are because Japanese education has been lacking in religion since the Meiji era. In contrast,many private Christian schools had been greatly eager to let the pupils acquire the religious minds and put great emphasis on their character formations. Then,on this paper I would like to clarify the following points ; (1) the principles, aims and philosophies of Christian education, (2) the lives of saints and their educational significances, (3) and the histories, educational philosophies, and practices of "mission schools" in Japan.
