Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the structure of an instrument that purports to measure critical thinking ability of nursing students. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on nursing students. The statistical methods used to investigate the study were covariance structure analysis with exploratory factor analysis and the maximum likelihood procedure. Results: 1) Six factors were calculated as a result of factor analysis using principal factor analysis with promax rotation. These are named: confidence in logical thinking, inquisitive mind, perseverance, objectivity, reflective attitude and focus on evidence. The total variance prior to promax rotation was 65.5%. 2) We used the Japanese version of NCS as an external criteria scale, a significant positive correlation was found, which verified the validity of the measurement. 3) The factors of confidence in logical thinking, perseverance, objectivity and reflective attitude were suggested to be stronger contributors to critical thinking than other factors. Conclusion: We identified the component factors of critical thinking. Based on the results of this study, we will attempt to develop a new measurement tool for critical thinking in nursing education.
