Abstract

This paper verifies the applicability of the electrostatic film motor as an actuation source in MR related biomechanical studies. The linear electrostatic film motor is MR-compatible, simple structure, and easily controlled by open-loop. A force sensor is developed using shielded strain gauges to monitor the applied force to the objects during the measurement. The developed system was tested against the human upper arm. Tagged cine MR images were obtained, and the obtained images clearly show the internal deformation of the upper arm under pushing force given by the electrostatic motor. Applied force was measured during MR scanning. Motion tracking calculations were conducted to evaluate the usability of the obtained images.
