This paper describes the business damages of Chinese and Japanese companies in Sichuan due to the Sichuan Earthquake of 2008.5.12. We have visited Chengdu, Sichuan in June mainly to conduct interviews with Japanese companies there about the business damages. The business damages of Chinese companies are summarized based on published reports, while the responses and recoveries of Japanese companies are summarized through our interview results. It was found that major difficulties in Japanese business operation immediate after the earthquake were 1) to overcome the Chinese employee's fears to return to office buildings, 2) to minimize the effect of local government's control on transportation, and 3) to respond to public attention on monetary contributions on earthquake recoveries.
