Abstract

This study investigated the effects of contact, advance information, and gender on attitudes of classmates toward mentally retarded peers in public elementary schools. In the investigation, 205 pupils were divided into three groups; pupils who had no contact with mentally retarded children, those who had prior contact with mentally retarded children with certain advance information about them, and those who had prior contact with mentally retarded children without any advance information about them. A questionnaire about daily life in school was issued to all participants and yielded the following three scales: [friend factor scale], [observe factor scale], and [goal factor scale]. As to contact experience, three groups were significantly different in the observe factor scale, where the group without the advance information showed the lowest mean of the scale scores. As to the gender, boys and girls were significantly different in the observe factor scale, and the goal factor scale, where girls showed the higher mean of the scale scores. These results suggest that pupils who have prior contact and certain advance information about mentally retarded children tend to have kind attitudes toward them and also that girls are inclined to have kind attitudes toward mentally retarded children.
